The vertical black thin line represents some date in the time axis.
Points A and B represents the state of technologies used by malicious software
writers and security vendors respectively.
Is it possible for malicious software writers to jump from point A to point C in a
very short period and be above security vendor’s line (bold black line in the
chart)?
I think that the answer is “yes” and we will analyze how this can be done in the
next part of this book.
Meantime, the first logical conclusion from the above chart is that there is always
be space between red and blue lines, meaning that at least theoretically it is
possible.
1.5 Software Misbehavior
There is nothing new that malicious users can misuse software. However, how
dangerous is it? Which risks and threats can it introduce to the security of
computer systems and networks? Which countermeasures we must apply to
protect our systems from this threat?
From the research conducted by me in this book, it follows that the threats are
more severe then the one can think. In the Part 2 of this book, you will find some
examples of Software Misuse and how dangerous it can be.
